What I do

I lead complex, technology-enabled change: digital, data, and the operating models that decide whether ambition turns into delivery. Portfolio visibility, governance, prioritisation, benefits realisation. The layer where executive teams make real decisions instead of managing noise.

I also write in public about the structural forces reshaping agencies and consultancies: AI compressing routine cognitive work, productised delivery, and what happens when the billable hour stops being the organising idea.

About

I have spent nearly thirty years across digital, data, and organisational transformation: global consulting, enterprise programmes, and hands-on product and platform leadership. The work I care about sits in the gap between ambition and delivery.

What that means in practice

  • Growing and running large consulting relationships where recurring revenue and outcomes both have to move.
  • Leading multi-year digital and data transformations inside complex organisations.
  • Building in-house product and engineering capability, and embedding analytics and AI into workflows that change real performance metrics, not slideware.

What I believe

  • Most transformation fails in the operating system of the work, not in the strategy deck.
  • AI will not save a firm that cannot show its work, productise judgement, or decide what to stop doing.
  • The format of consulting deliverables is about to change: from documents to interpret, toward systems clients can run.

In public

I publish at Howard’s Subs: transformation, AI, and professional services. I also co-founded Vibe Studio (Studio:Blueprint) and document the build in public. Analysis and opinions are mine.

Writing

The archive lives on Substack. This is a reading list: recent pieces that show how I think.

  1. Accenture Just Told You Something Important

A product launch as market signal, especially if you run an independent firm in the mid-market.

  2. Productised Consulting Is Not a Template

Most “productised” consulting is a service with a tidier PDF. Methodology in the exec summary is not a product.

  3. Agents Propose. Consultants Decide. Evidence Proves.

The question is not whether agents can produce useful work. It is who owns the decision and the proof.

  4. The Consultancies Aren’t Coming for Your Clients. They Already Have Them.

Holdcos and the Big Four are not playing the same game. Structural advantage beats another AI pitch deck.
